Containers do the most work per square foot

A pair of well-built planters at an entry changes a house or a storefront more than a thousand dollars of shrubs in the back yard. They are also the fastest thing to kill, because containers dry out, drain badly, and get planted with whatever was blooming at the store that week.

Containers in the Midlands can hit brutal soil temperatures on a west-facing porch in July. We size containers big enough to hold moisture, choose plants that tolerate the exposure, mulch the surface, and put them on drip. Then maintenance is a visit, not a rescue.
